Banana Plants ~ Available late May

Bananas can be grown in the Puget Sound area.  They are very showy with large leaves that are brilliant green in color and illuminate with the sun shining on them. We offer the Musa Basjoo, Cold Hardy Banana plants.

It takes about three years for them to get to their potential height.  They like partial to full sun and well draining soil.  We do not recommend these in frequent high wind areas.  The leaves on bananas are what make this a great addition to a tropical looking garden.

Maintenance is easy, water like palms and watch them grow.  They will die back with the first hard freeze.  Just let them be.  The leaves collapse over the top of the trunks and protect the plant from the coming winter.  In early spring the last leaf from the previous growth will start to grow again.  Just trim off all of the old foliage and they will grow again.

DO NOT trim your bananas to the ground.  If you do so they will never reach their potential height or fruit.

Mature bananas may fruit after a mild winter.  It’s very cool to see.

Bananas produce a couple of pups each year.  This gives a “pipe organ” effect with plants of varying heights.  You will need a 4’ diameter planting area for the Musa Basjoos, “Cold Hardy Bananas”.
